The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art from the aunt Denise. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become interested in production for television journalism. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the house and examining the garbage from one of the jury. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. The year 1999 was the time she established her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
